This incense has been artisanally crafted by the Koh-Shi aroma masters on the Japanese island of Awaji. One of the earliest written records of Japanese history recounts that a large agar log washed ashore in the sixth century and emanated such a beautiful aroma when the villagers burned some of it as firewood that they gifted the rest to the prince and empress. Prince Shotoku commissioned a statue from it and asked the villagers to enshrine the remaining wood. The exquisite Kareiki Shrine still stands today. The Awaji began making incense in the 1850s, when a trader saw the island’s potential, thanks not only to its bustling port, but also to the strong western winds that aid in drying the incense naturally. Over the centuries, trade associations were formed, and the Koh-Shi, or incense master, accreditation was established. Today, the Koh-Shis are famed for their ability to establish perfect harmony when crafting incense from raw materials that change every year due to weather and natural growing conditions. Because of our dedication to craftsmanship at the highest level, we sought a partnership with one of Awaji’s most legendary incense makers, who have infused their scent sticks with our signature Côte d’Azur fragrance. The aroma of the clean-burning incense evokes the natural sensuality of the legendary Mediterranean destination: Sun-drenched notes of Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange make way to reveal lush tuberose paired with white butterfly jasmine and spiritually centering essence of sandalwood and amber. May your daily ritual be filled with beauty and peace.
